Conventions of a rap/grime magazine.

The conventions of my hybrid genres front covers, they tend to be eye catching with their colours; either multi-coloured or very bright or patterned backgrounds, or relatively dull colours are used eg. grey but the font or main image appear to be very vibrant and it will stand out from the plain/dull other colours. Also a convention of my rap/grime genre's magazine is that there tends to be not very main cover lines, and the cover is not cluttered. The convention of most music magazines, including my genre's magazines main image tends to be one artist, and there focus is always down the camera.

MY GENRE.. at last!

What am i going to do?

Well basically i've got alot of work to do to get my magazine back on track and where i want it to be. I've definately chosen the genre of music im going to do; grime/rap alternative. This genre features people like Azealia Banks, M.I.A, Kreayshawn, wiley and loads of others! But basically I've been really indicisive with what ive wanted to do, how i've wanted the final out come to be and stuff, but i've got to the point in which i NEED to actually sort it out. So yeah, im going to makes some important decisions and get on with it. I want my magazine to be edgy and cool but also be able to apeal to a large audience, obviously my target audience will be people who listen to rap/grime but i would like it to appeal to boys as much as it does girls, and also for it to appeal to an audience from roughly 15-20 year olds.

So in order to acheive what i actually want to do im going to have to do lots of things. I need to:
*Do more research into my chosen genre; grime/rap alternative.
*analyise the data from my surveys.
*deconstruct a magazine's front cover, contents page and double page spread.
*create a customer profile and write my own editorial profile.
*decide on a name for my magzine.
*create a mood board.
*make flat plans of my front cover, contents page and double page spread.
*complete a risk assesment of the photo shoot
*take my photos.
*edit them, and yeah that's it put it my masthead, substory's etc and thats my front cover done.. hopefully. :)

visual representation of  mucic genres.
Initial researching.

There's over 3,300 magazines which range from many different things, from cycling to hair magazines and even food magazines.

400+ of these are music magazines. there's 40+ indie rock magazines, which is a genre that i am concidering. Some of the sub genres of this would be blues and pop.
some of the genres of magazines that are out are:
Jazz, alternative (which is a very broad genre, it has loads of sub genres in this catorgary) R&B, rap, hip hop, drum and bass, country and metal.

DECONSTRUCTION OF A MAGAZINE COVER.

The selling line of NME is new musical express, this allows the target audience to believe that they are receiving the newest and exclusive information and that they are staying up to date with new artists or up and coming bands.

The masthead of NME is usually red, as the dominant colour of the magazine is red because of her hair they have used a white masthead to stand out. However on the cover the three main ‘NME’ colours have been used: red white and black which is their brand identity.

The lure of this magazine is that it’s a special edition, this makes the target audience more likey to buy it as they would be buying this specific copey which would be exclusive.

The language used is quite minimal and this cover doesn’t have many sub headings down the sides, it stated the bands or artists you will read about through out the magazine and show’s that Florence is a big feature to this particular edition. The language is formal and straight to the point because the magazine has been targeted at an older audience, mid teen and above. It’s minimal and has not got many lures because the target audience of the magazine are more interested in the content of the magazine than prizes or promises of exclusive information.

The main image is Florence looking directly and seductively at the camera, the shot is a medium close up and her hair is very striking. The red connotes passion which is partly because of the look on her face.  Also the main Cover line is ‘FLORENCE’ which is straight to the point and striking as it’s also the only black text on the cover which draws your attention to it. When you Z read, you see ‘NME’ then you see the main image of Florence then you see the main cover line.

Prelim exercise.

This is my Prelim task, I specifically chose each individual aspect to the cover. I thought very hard about the composition of my shot, I purposely took the photograph at this angle to emphasise the main purpose of my magazine: national dance week and to engage the target audience. The photo was taken in the dance studio and I purposely included other students in the background to emphasise the fact anyone could join in, regardless to who the person is. Also it implies that its fun and a group activity which may attract people to get involved. I composed the page so that the eye is drawn to the centre of the page and the text runs down the left hand third of the page.
I carefully colour coded the whole page in different blues. I wanted to use the blues in the fonts to match well with her top and the kings schools uniform colour is blue. I chose a large masthead so that the eye is drawn to the magazine. I also added an online poll to see if my target audience who are students are attracted to the front cover of my magazine.

All about me and Media

Hi, I'm a student at The Kings School sixth form. I am studying English Literature, Media Studies and Religion philosophy and ethics. I decided to take media Studies as at GCSE level I really enjoyed Art, and i particularly enjoyed the photography side to my art work, and I decided to study Media Studies as I knew photography would be a large part of Media Studies, but I wanted to have more substance behind my AS and I knew Media Studies was not just about pictures and taking pictures as Media involves text as well as just images.   I also think that the subjects I decided to study complement each of the other ones very nicely. One of my favourite bands are 'The xx'.

My favourite TV programme is Shameless

, and my favourite film is 'Donnie Darko'.

I read magazines like Cosmopolitan and Heat. I really like social networking, I have a Twitter account   https://twitter.com/rowanallenn and a Facebook account I regularly update.

Do you like the front cover of my student magazine?
